5 Essential Tips for Post Construction Clean Up

Jul 22, 2022

Constructing a home is an enormous investment that gives you an unparalleled sense of ownership and responsibility. Most people can't wait to get into their new home. Before you can enjoy your new house, however, there is still quite a bit of work to be done. Post construction clean up is a critical part of moving into a brand-new home. According to Nearby Engineers, a room must be vacuum-cleaned at least twice before moving in. Here are five crucial steps to post construction clean up you should know.

1. Open Up the Windows

No matter the season, open up the windows to allow airflow to draw out dust. This will also help dull the plaster and wood smells that come with new construction. Opening the windows can also reduce the smell of cleaning products as you start your clean up process.

2. Dust and Sweep the Rooms

Sweeping with the windows open will help dust travel outside of your home. Use a microfiber cloth that attracts dust particles to wipe everything in sight. Don't forget to tidy between blinds, shelves, door and window frames, and all surfaces. Start from the back door or exit, and work forward throughout your home. You may need to do this a few times before the home feels truly dust-free.

3. Vacuum and Mop

Taking care of the floor is one of the first things you should do after dusting. Mop your hardwood or tile floors to ensure that no dust is left in the spaces between boards and tiles. Vacuuming any new carpet is also crucial. Move the vacuum cleaner slowly to thoroughly pick up all dust and debris. Do at least two vacuum rounds in each room.

4. Check the Air Vents

Most people forget about the air vents during the process of post construction clean up. Use your vacuum to clean the external grills to avoid clogging the heating system or recirculating dust in the house. It may also be a good idea to hire out a duct cleaner to flush all the sawdust, plaster, and drywall dust out of your ducts after a construction job.

5. Perfect Your Paint

It's normal for paint particles to get into hinges during construction. Take a good look around your doorknobs, hinges, room corners, and other easily-missed spots to see if there are any small painting imperfections you can fix. Cleaning crevices and repainting tiny missed spots is a critical part of post construction clean up.

Clearly, cleaning up your new home before moving in can be a big job to handle alone. If you're looking for professionals to help with your post construction clean up, give Horgan Enterprises a call today. We look forward to helping you move in!
